BASKETBALL – A tragedy. Basketball player Adreian Payne, who passed through Villeurbanne, with which he won the French championship in 2019 and which had a hundred matches in the NBA, died at the age of 31 on Monday May 9 in a shooting in Florida, announced the Orlando Police.

“At 1:37 a.m. on May 9, Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call from the 2500 block of Egret Shores Drive in Orlando, regarding a shooting. A man, identified as Adreian Payne, born February 19, 1991, was shot and pronounced dead in hospital,” said the statement from local authorities posted on Twitter.

Police added that the 29-year-old suspected shooter, who remained at the scene, was taken into custody for first-degree murder. No information has been released about the motive for this tragedy.

A former college basketball star when he played for Michigan State, Adreian Payne played as a power forward and pivot.

As pointed out BasketballUSA, while still at university, the player had befriended Lacey Holsworth, an 8-year-old girl with cancer. Having become the emblem of the Spartans in 2014, she succumbed to her illness the day after the championship final.

The player was then drafted, still in 2014, in 15th position by the Atlanta Hawks without winning.

A career around the world

His career has made him a globetrotter, then passing through Minnesota (2014-2017), Orlando (2018), Greece, Panathinaikos (2018 and 2019) with a return trip to China in the meantime (Nanjing) , before playing two seasons with Villeurbanne in Elite (2019-2020).

Payne then joined the Turkish team of Ormanspor, then that, Lithuanian, of Utena, before returning to the United States where he was without a club.

Some of his former teams expressed their sadness on social media. “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Adreian Payne. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family members and friends,” the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise wrote.

“Terribly shocked by the announcement of the death of Adreian Payne (…) Difficult to find the words when you lose a family member… All our thoughts for his loved ones”, tweeted for its part, Asvel.
