Android 13 beta 2: personalization, privacy, notifications… here are all the new features

Android 13 includes many new features. The most striking are summarized in this article: notifications now work in opt-in and Monet can apply to third-party icons.

That’s it Google has just officially presented at its Google I / O conference this Wednesday, May 11, 2022 the new features of Android 13 beta 2. We take stock of the most interesting features.

More control over privacy and notifications

The most massive novelty of Android 13 concerns notifications. From now on, an app will have to ask your permission before showering you with little incentives to visit it. We thus pass from an opt-out logic (you are automatically subscribed and you must deactivate notifications) to opt-in (you must accept to be subject to notifications). A real revolution and, we hope, a real saving of time on a daily basis.

Faced with iOS 15 and the iPhone, Android is often accused of being less respectful of your private life. Android 13 has therefore logically emphasized this sensitive point.

Android 12 already focused a lot on privacy, Android 13 wants to go a little further by adding some interesting options. The first is quite simple: so far, when you give permission to an app to access your files, you can’t really filter the data exposed. Android 13 will now separate access to your local files into two parts:Photos and videos” and “music and sound“. In this way, an application that would process sound for example would not have access to your holiday images in Montargis.

Still in the area of permissions, Android 13 will reduce the number of apps that can access your location. Also, your clipboard history will be regularly erased, to prevent apps from accessing sensitive information.

To finish on the security side, Android 13 includes a new menu entirely dedicated to this which tells you at a glance if you have a problem in this area.

Personalization and Material You

It goes without saying that the novelty that has made the biggest impression in Android 12 is Material You and its Monet system, which allows colors to be adapted to the wallpaper. Google is well aware of this.

The Mountain View company has therefore decided to solve Monet’s main concern: now, applications that do not belong to the Google suite will be able to benefit from this color customization. The result is direct: a more consistent and aesthetic welcome screen.

The media control has also been revised to further personalize the experience. You will now be able to enjoy the cover of the album you are listening to.

Another small niche asset: each app will eventually be able to work with a different language, previously chosen by the user. For example, if you communicate in English with your loved ones, but speak French at work, you can decide that your personal communication app works in English and that of work in French.
