Call of Duty Modern Warfare II: off to a flying start on PC… and PlayStation!
According to data from SteamDB, which is still to be taken with a bit of hindsight, nearly 111,000 gamers are shooting each other on PC via Steam, with a peak at 263,174 players at launch. By going to the Valve platform, we discover that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is at the top of sales, ahead of Cyberpunk 2077, FIFA 23, Lost Ark and Football Manager 2023.
The official numbers offered by Steam indicate that 111,533 players are currently competing, on a usually fairly quiet schedule, except for the behemoths of CS:GO, Dota 2, Lost Ark, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends. In short, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 seems gone to be a real hitand not only on PC!
This morning, the official PlayStation account on Twitter announced that the launch of this new installment in the franchise had broke a record, and not the least. According to the tweet in question, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 would have achieved the best launch in PlayStation Store history for a Call of Duty game. This official statement, although devoid of precise figurestakes into account the pre-orders but also digital copies sold on launch day.
Congratulations to @InfinityWard and @Activision on the biggest PlayStation Store launch ever for a Call of Duty game (including pre-orders and day one sales). Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is now available on PS4 and PS5!
A message diverted to the attention of the authorities linked to competition?
The first sales figures should not be long in coming, and some observers see in this tweet a message addressed to organizations responsible for validating or not the takeover of Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft. Indeed, Sony and Microsoft clash in the media and with the competition authorities to tip the balance one way or the other. For Sony, whose arguments seem to have been heard by the British organization (CMA), the takeover could put Microsoft in a position of strengthnotably thanks to the presence of Call of Duty in the suitcases.
Microsoft responded by stating that in the video game market, Sony was still far ahead, or that there was no question of making the FPS license an exclusive, of the month in the immediate future. Thus, we could see in this tweet a way for Sony to recall the importance of the Call of Duty franchise, and the fundamental nature of its presence on PlayStation consoles. Of course, this analysis must be taken with tweezersbecause Sony does not directly mention this case, and did not communicate further on the Call of Duty case.
