You could not miss the bombshell that fell on the NBA on June 30, a few hours before the opening of the Free Agency. Kevin Durant asked his franchise, the Brooklyn Nets, for his trade. But now the more important question is: where could it go? And how to carry out such a historic transfer? Right away, zoom on the Washington Wizards and their possibilities in order to recover KD.
Friday June 30, 2022, 8:49 p.m. French time, the explosion falls.
Kevin Durant wants to leave Brooklyn, time is running out and Coco wants to win more rings. After the time of the exploding thermometer, the entire TrashTalk editorial team has therefore asked themselves THE question that torments us all… but where the hell will KD pursue his career? To do this, and because we like to push the delirium as far as possible, we have collectively decided to look at all the NBA franchises. Yes yes, all the franchises: 29 detailed articles, with a quick overview of what could happen.
Make way for Bradley Beal’s Washington Wizards.
The Wizards situation
PS: This table does not yet take into account the transfer sending Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith to the Nuggets against Monte Morris and Will Barton.
# Why would the Wizards go after KD?
A bit like Damian Lillard in Portland, Bradley Beal deserves his loyalty to the Wizards to be rewarded by the arrival of a very big name to finally be able to play the leading roles. Bealou has just signed a supermax extension and the Wizards therefore logically want to become competitive again as soon as possible. So what better than a Kevin Durant to change the dimension of the franchise? Plus, it’s a reminder that the Slim Reaper hails from DC, and a homecoming would be a great story after the Nets fiasco.
# Which players are unavailable?
How to associate Bradley Beal with Kevin Durant? That’s the question running through General Manager Tommy Sheppard’s head today. In an attempt to find a solution to this equation with multiple unknowns, all players outside of Bealou are logically available. Because when you have an opportunity – however small – to recover a player of the caliber of KD, you are almost ready for anything.
# Which Wizards players could catch the Nets’ attention?
- Johnny Davis, Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija, Corey Kispert, Kyle Kuzma (?)
The Wizards don’t necessarily have transcendent youngsters on their roster. By “transcendent”, we mean an almost certain future All-Star. On the other hand, the capital’s franchise has the advantage of having a core of potentially solid young players on the wings who are just waiting to progress (Hachimura, Avdija, Kispert). The Wizards also picked up rookie Johnny Davis with their tenth pick in the 2022 Draft, a prospect that Nets manager Sean Marks may be interested in. As for Kyle Kuzma, he remains on a good campaign where he has made great progress, and at 26 his best years are probably still ahead of him. Nevertheless, Kuz is eligible for a contract extension and could become a free agent in 2023. So not sure the Nets are really excited about this file. Finally, a small detail to keep in mind, any trade between Brooklyn and Washington would probably involve Kristaps Porzingis for salary issues.
# Do they have Draft picks to offer them?
The Wizards have yet to drop a first-round draft pick (to New York) tied to the January 2020 John Wall–Russell Westbrook trade, and since the latter has protections potentially through 2026, the wiggle room is now. limited for the Washington franchise (impossible to trade a first-round pick until this date). But otherwise the Wizards still have their overall draft capital, with six first-round picks by 2029.
Nets salary grid
The perfect Wizards package :
- Kristaps Porzingis
- Johnny Davis
- Rui Hachimura
- Deni Avdija
- 2 first round picks / pick swaps
Feasibility score: 3/10
Kevin Durant on the Washington side? In fact, nothing is impossible and as a famous philosopher from Hérault said: it is by doing anything that you become anyone. To acquire KD, the Wizards know in any case what they have to do. So, is it tempting or not?
