Cut! recounts the making of a Z-series film. A choice that might seem irreverent at the opening of the biggest film festival in the world. Michel Hazanavicius, king of pastiche, this time parodies the zombie film with a beautiful cast: Romain Duris, Bérénice Béjot, Finnegan Oldfield, Luàna Bajrami, Grégory Gadebois, Jean-Pascal Zadi, and Raïka Hazanavicius, the director’s daughter for the premiere times on screen.

It is a UFO that the director of The Artist, and it’s successful!

A filmmaker in search of inspiration, Rémi agrees to make a low-budget zombie film. Filming in an industrial wasteland brings together a reduced and jaded team, actors and actresses put to the test and a supercharged director. Greenish monsters, pursuits and liters of hemoglobin splash on the screen, until real undead invite themselves on the set.

This remake of Don’t cut! by the Japanese Shin’ichirô Ueda (2019) fits Michel Hazanavicius like a glove. Initially titled Z (like zombie and series Z), the film was renamed Cut! by the director because of the war in Ukraine, the letter having become an acronym identifying the Russian troops. If it takes the opposite of the original title (Don’t cut!), the film keeps the three-part construction of Shin’ichirô Ueda: the completed zombie film, its pre-production and its making-of. Three acts in crescendo where each time we learn a little more about this “crazy” shooting. Like this inconsistency where Western characters are decked out with Japanese names. Why ? You will know it by seeing the film until the end. Surprise !

The opening zombie movie Cut! brings together the codes of Bis (series B) and Z (Le Bis du Bis): bad actors, scenes stretched to the point of boredom, inane and involuntarily comic dialogues… everything that makes it so charming. Cut! is a true homage to these films and Hazanavicius, who obviously knows his subject, revels in it and we with it.

The second part reveals the preproduction. How the film was born, sponsored by a Japanese producer who wants to see a French adaptation of her latest success in Japan. Very good idea that integrates the original film by Shin’ichirô Ueda into the plot of the remake. Finally, the making-of lifts the veil on all the inconsistencies of the film seen in the first part. Cut! is a goldsmith’s model and also a tribute to all filmmakers.

Summary: A zombie movie set in an abandoned building. Between jaded technicians and actors not really concerned, only the director seems invested with the necessary energy to give life to yet another low-budget horror film. The irruption of authentic undead will disrupt the filming…
