Thanks to Back to the Future, DeLorean is a legendary brand. However, the manufacturer released only one model in 1981, the DMC-12, which completely flopped. While DeLorean had gone bankrupt, here they are back with the Alpha5, a sublime electric car looking to the future. At least that was needed.

Aside from a handful of 1980s automobile and/or movie fans, no one was expecting DeLorean anymore. The brand with posthumous glory was dead and buried in everyone’s mind.

And yet, the Alpha 5 will be officially presented in August 2022 at the Pebble Beach elegance contest.

We therefore still do not have a precise date of marketing or price, but we expect production to start in 2024 and a 6-figure price (our colleagues at IGN are talking about a launch price from of $175,000).

This is all pretty vague. Do not panic, we obviously have much more concrete information, in particular concerning the design and certain technical characteristics.

Like the DMC-12, this is a sports car

Alpha5 is 100% electric with batteries over 100 kWh (which is almost 500 km per charge)

As for the look of the beast, we are very far from what the DMC-12 offered. You will surely see articles online that say that this is a new version of the mythical racing car of Back to the future…this is totally wrong. Apart from the famous butterfly doors (which open vertically), everything has changed.

DeLorean: a brand with a complicated history

DeLorean has gone down as a shooting star in automotive history. The brand was founded in 1975, marketed its only model, the DMC-12, in 1981, then went bankrupt in 1982. Its founder, John DeLorean, was even accused of drug trafficking to bail out his business.

While everyone should have forgotten about a small car brand that only produced 9,200 altogether, the DeLorean name still resonates strongly in 2022. All because of a movie released in 1985: Back to the future. If the DMC-12 was chosen at the time, it was already for its futuristic look.

Ironically, the time machine from a cult 1980s film has been the DeLorean brand’s only means of survival through the decades.

It is quite difficult to understand how DeLorean was able to come back in 2022. From our research, it appears that a group of investors believed in the project and took this risky bet.

Hoping for them that things go better than for the DMC-12 and that Tesla finds a new serious competitor here.
