news culture Doctor Strange 2: The film amputated by several tens of minutes in editing?
Highly anticipated due to its position as the pivotal film of the MCU and due to the fact of coming out after Spider-Man No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made a canon start in American dark rooms. But the film, shorter than the average MCU feature film, would have been cut quite a bit.
Doctor Strange 2: Much shorter than expected?
Eyeing very frankly in the direction of the horror cinemawith a fairly dark approach and themes that do not omit the super-heroic dimension, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness succeeds in its start and seems set for stay for very long weeks on display.
But according to Sam Raimi, who is directing the film, it could have been much longer if we had stayed on the duration of the first edit. It is not uncommon for a film to be shortened or lengthened with new scenes, but it is rare that we learn it so early and that doesn’t seem to bother the director. So here is what the director, to whom we owe the trilogy of Spiderman with Tobey Maguire, to our colleagues from Collider:
I don’t remember how long the first edit lasted. It was probably something like two hours and forty minutes, then it slowly went down as we did reshoots. And (…) we arrived smoothly at two hours and (6) minutes in total.
A shortening that is not necessarily due to a conflict
I have to say that the reshootsthat is to say the fact of shooting new scenes, are not necessarily made against the advice of the director, but may aim to make the whole thing more fluid, as our colleagues from Allo Ciné remind us. An idea that seems to emerge from the site’s exchanges with Sam Raimi
(Marvel officials) have been very supportive of me and my editors Bob Murawski and Tia Nolan to lead the way. They made us notes with suggestions, but they were very good, because it is a company that takes the integrity of its characters to heart. (…) Their notes took us in the right direction, not that of making money for the studio, but rather: “no, that’s what Doctor Strange would say” or “no, that’s not how it happened in the last Avengers movie, it’s the opposite, we have to be consistent'”.
Do not count too much on the idea of finding all deleted scenes when the film is released on Blu-Ray and in digital purchase. The director indicates that some excerpts will be present, but cannot say if there will be more than two or three:
I’m trying to remember what Marvel is going to include in deleted scenes. It’s really their choice, but I know that there are at least two or three planned. I don’t know if there will be more though.
Globally, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness been well received by critics and the public, who feel the paw of Sam Raimi. Obviously, there are more mixed opinions, evoking the fact that Wanda “steals the show from Stephen Strange” or that the feature film could have go further in its horrifying dimension. It remains to be seen how the film behaves in the coming weeks and if it will be able to register among the best films of the MCU in the long term.
