CONSUMPTION – No more making excuses to end unsolicited sales calls. To fight against abusive telephone canvassing, the government is imposing from this Sunday, January 1, 2023 specific numbers to identify call centers. The French will thus be able to unmask them at a glance on their handset.

The numbers in 06 and 07 will no longer be assigned to them, and calls from these centers will necessarily start with 09 37, 09 38 or 09 39, reports TF1. This measure will also help to combat the shortage of numbers for mobile phones. In recent years, VTC drivers and delivery people in particular have had more and more laptops. Problem: almost 90% of the possible combinations starting with 06 and 07 have already been assigned.

Prohibition of canvassing on weekends and public holidays

The supervision of commercial canvassing will be further reinforced in March. A decree published in the Official Journal in mid-October defined the prohibition of these calls on weekends and public holidays, and supervised hours from Monday to Friday, from March 1, 2023.

“Consumer canvassing by telephone is authorized from Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is, however, prohibited on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays., is it written in this decree. This framework will apply “both to people not registered on the Bloctel list », which allows you to register your number free of charge to oppose cold calling, “only to those registered but requested under a current contract”.

Expected fines

However, this framework will not apply “if the consumer has given his express and prior consent to be called, the professional must justify this”. A person cannot be solicited “by telephone for commercial prospecting purposes more than four times a month by the same professional or by a person acting on his behalf”it is specified.

At last, “when the consumer refuses this canvassing during the conversation, the professional refrains from contacting him or attempting to contact him before the expiration of a period of sixty calendar days from this refusal”.

Violation of these rules may be sanctioned with an administrative fine of 75,000 euros for a natural person and 375,000 euros for a legal person.
