Interesting God of War games (13/20)
God of War: Ascension (PS3, 2013)
We start this ranking of games in the God of War saga with a very special episode: God of War: Ascension. After the box of God of War III which came to complete the story of Kratos in the world of Greek mythology in an epic way, the Santa Monica Studio teams follow up directly with a new episode, but this time takes the form of a prequel. This episode therefore features a younger Kratos who, for his first adventure, will take revenge on the Erinyes. who torture him after he broke his pact with Ares, who had yet manipulated him to kill his family. On the gameplay side, we find all the elements that made the charm of the series but without major novelties since the Blades of Chaos are the only weapons available. Besides that, we can count on multiplayer as a new feature. Still, Ascension has had a hard time second-best to the excellence of God of War III, and its overly wise adventure has often seen it as the franchise’s ugly duckling. However, it is still a very good beat’em up that can rest on the solid foundations of its elders. But in the face of mixed critical and popular reception, Santa Monica Studios is going to rethink the formula for God of War to deliver the 2018 episode that we’ll talk about later.

God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP, 2008)
After the success of the first God of War on PS2 in 2005, Ready at Dawn (The Order: 1886, Daxter) came to see the teams in Santa Monica to suggest that they develop an episode on PSP, Sony’s newly released portable console. Thereby, Chains of Olympus arrives a year after God of War second of the name and offers a stunning adventure for a nomadic support. This installment takes place between Ascension and the first game of 2005, and we follow as usual Kratos who works in the service of the gods of Olympus and who will have to put an end to the conquering wills of Morpheus and Persephone. In terms of gameplay, Ready at Dawn manages a small feat of adapting the gameplay of PS2 games to PSP, which nevertheless has fewer buttons than a Dualshock 2 controller. As a result, we are entitled to one of the most beautiful titles on the machine, acclaimed by critics and players, to the point of being the seventh best-selling title on the console. A first successful test on PSP, even if it is a less ambitious experience than Divine Retribution.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP, 2010)
After the success of Chains of Olympus, Ready at Dawn decides to follow up immediately with a sequel, as long as the iron is hot. If the previous episode was a prequel, Ghost of Sparta takes place between the first two numbered games of the saga, but comes out the same year as God of War III, or even a few months later. What put a significant pressure on the shoulders of the project. Despite everything, the latter is developed very quickly, in barely 23 months, with the ambition of doing better than its predecessor: longer, more epic and above all, more enemies on the screen to push the PSP to its limits. This time, while Kratos is still trying to calm his demons that haunt him, he meets his mother who tells him that his brother is alive, which will lead him to descend into the realms of the dead to face the god. , Thanatos. An episode even more epic than its elder, but which once again suffers from the comparison with God of War III released some time before. Despite everything, we are in front of one of the most beautiful games on the console, and quite simply one of the best experiences available on the machine.
The Outstanding God of War Games (18/20)
God of War (PS2, 2005)
Released in 2005, the very first God of War caused the console gaming world to explode, delivering an epic and awe-inspiring experience rarely seen at the time. At this time, we discover for the first time Kratos, this former Spartan captain who finds himself working under the orders of the gods of Olympus by force of circumstance. In this first episode, our hero is tasked by Athena with defeating Ares, the god of war, using Pandora’s box. In a series of flashbacks, we learn that Kratos was once one of his servants and that he was betrayed by the deity who caused him to slaughter his family. Thus, after a long quest, the “Ghost of Sparta” kills Ares and becomes the new god of war. From this very first episode, we find all the bases that will make the success of the series, namely combos using the blades of chaos, impressive boss fights, or even QTEs. Enough to launch a saga that has become cult today.
God of War II: Divine Retribution (PS2, 2007)
Building on the success of the first installment, Santa Monica immediately follows up with a sequel that promises to be even more epic and which is well destined to establish itself as one of the essential titles of the PS2. This time, as Kratos has become a god of war, he is betrayed by Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, who strips him of his divinity and kills him. After being saved by the titan Gaia, the latter tells him to find the Fates for revenge.. To offer an even more spectacular experience, this second episode offers four times more bosses than the previous game, but also magic attacks and new abilities to offer new combat options. Result, God of War II: Divine Retribution is a real success, described as the swan song of the PS2, for its impressive confrontations and its gripping story of revenge. With this component, Santa Monica confirms that God of War is an essential PlayStation license, but also a big name in beat’em up.
God of War games that are masterpieces (19/20)
God of War III (PS3, 2010)
God of War III is the conclusion to Kratos’ adventures in the world of Greek mythology, and what a conclusion. This time, It’s time for revenge for the ancient god of war who can count on the support of the Titans to face the gods of Olympus and take revenge after the betrayal of Zeus. After a first failed attempt, Kratos will go in search of Pandora’s box, the same object that he used to defeat Ares, in order to be able to kill the king of the gods. Well, very clearly, God of War III pushes all the sliders to the maximum to offer a third opus in the form of a masterful conclusion at all levels. Without revealing too much, it suffers to evoke the final fight of Zeus to bring back excellent memories to all those who played the game at the time. Thus, this third installment offers an incredible outcome to the adventures of Kratos, so much so that the title is simply part of the pantheon of the best PS3 titles.
God of War: Ragnarok (PS4/PS5, 2022)
For the saga taking place in the world of the Olympian gods, Santa Monica had decided to make a trilogy. But for Norse mythology, it will be a duology. Thereby, God of War: Ragnarok is therefore the conclusion of the adventures of Kratos and his son, Atreus, introduced in the 2018 game. Following the revelations of the previous game, our two heroes set out to explore the nine kingdoms in search of answers, as Asgard, the domain of the gods, prepares for a prophetic clash. It must be said that the Fimbulventr, the three-year winter that precedes Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology, is already well advanced. In their quest, Kratos and Atreus will have to make choices between their safety and that of the kingdoms.

God of War (PS4, 2018)
We end this overview with the soberly titled God of War of 2018 which, if there is a sequel to God of War III, takes the form of a gameplay reboot. Exit Greek mythology, this time Kratos evolves in the world of Norse mythology in which he has refounded a family, with his wife and son. Unfortunately, the latter dies at the start of the game and the whole challenge of the adventure will be to go and scatter her ashes on the highest peak in the world, in accordance with her wish.. Father and son will therefore explore the different kingdoms of Nordic mythology in search of this place, which will lead them to meet many characters, but also the deities of this pantheon. With this new beginning, God of War offers a more intimate adventure that revolves around the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, while not forgetting the epic moments that make the charm of the saga, all with stunning graphics for of the PS4. The title is also a revolution with its completely redesigned gameplay, in particular thanks to the Leviathan axe, but also with the light-RPG aspect provided by the armor statistics.
