LIVERPOOL-REAL MADRID. After the violent incidents around the Stade de France, Gérald Darmanin again pointed the finger at massive ticket fraud. For its part, UEFA announced that it had an “independent investigation”
22:33 – An independent investigation has been opened by UEFA
This Monday evening, UEFA announced the opening of an independent investigation to analyze the incidents which punctuated the pre-match of the Champions League final at the Stade de France. In a press release, UEFA believes that it will be a question of “examining the decision-making, responsibilities and behavior of all parties involved in the final”.
21:43 – Gérald Darmanin reassures in view of the 2024 Paris Olympics
Invited on the set of 20 hours of TF1, Gérald Darmanin wanted to reassure the French after the incidents of the Stade de France and this while France must host the Olympic Games of 2024, in Paris: “To solve these problems, the minister des Sports asked that we study that the tickets are tamper-proof, totally digital for any competition in France.
20:10 – Gérald Darmanin persists: “There were between 30,000 and 40,000 people with falsified tickets”
Guest of 20 hours of TF1, Gérald Darmanin returned to the Stade de France affair: “What happened on Saturday is regrettable. The party was ruined. There were between 30,000 and 40,000 people with counterfeit or no-ticket tickets.” In addition, the Minister of the Interior explained: “We only had problems with the British platform. But that does not mean that the English are the counterfeiters.”
5:30 p.m. – “The triggering event is counterfeit banknotes” according to Camille Chaize
Camille Chaize, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, assures in “Apolline Matin” this Monday on RMC and RMC Story that the origin of the incidents at the Stade de France on Saturday evening is linked to fake tickets sold to Liverpool supporters. “The triggering fact is these fake tickets sold en masse to English supporters, assures the spokesperson for the Interior. Afterwards, the pre-filters were dropped for some to avoid crowd movements, because we know that it can lead to injuries or even tragedies, as a few years ago in Belgium. The choice was made to favor the entry of people who perhaps did not have tickets. And inside, there were supporters , but not only. There were also a number of opportunistic offenders, who wanted to assault or steal.”
5:00 p.m. – The Liverpool club has requested an investigation
In the wake of the incidents which mainly affected his supporters, the Reds have called for an investigation to be opened “into the causes of these unacceptable problems”.
16:41 – The intelligence services had alerted the authorities
According to information from Europe 1, the police officers of the national division for the fight against hooliganism (DNLH) had from Wednesday May 25, four days before the meeting, warned the authorities of the risk of overflows in a note. Analysts projected the presence in Paris of “50,000 to 75,000 English supporters”, including only 50 to 100 “supporters at risk”. In this four-page note that Europe 1 consulted, the DNLH describes very precisely the flow of travelers from England to the Stade de France. And alert on the English supporters without tickets present in the capital, “around 50,000. Some of them will be in possession of counterfeit tickets and will try to use them to access the stadium”
4:30 p.m. – The European press criticizes
Some European media were quick to react to the incidents on the sidelines of the Champions League final: “These incidents raise serious questions about UEFA’s organization of a major event” for The Guardian (England) . On the Spanish side, the newspaper Sport added a layer: “A shame: the final started half an hour late because of the chaos at the entrance to the stadium”.
16:00 – English clubs loaded by Darmanin
“The doctrine of maintaining French order has made it possible to avoid deaths and injuries. The comparison with the Olympic Games and the Rugby World Cup seems to me quite disproportionate knowing that there are, obviously, only in football with certain English clubs that there are these events. I would remind you that France has organized a large number of very high-level rugby and football matches in recent times without difficulty. This was particularly the case during the Cup final of France. In 2019, the final between Liverpool and Tottenham had the same problems in Madrid. A final at Wembley a few years ago had exactly the same problems. There is also the Liverpool coach who called the supporters to come to France even without tickets. We ended up with tens of thousands of British supporters, some of whom had respected the rules perfectly. And a tiny but extremely lively part who jostled the authorities.”
3:30 p.m. – “We have to improve” for the Minister of Sports
“We want to strengthen the management of these major events. We have seen that we need to improve on flow management, to ensure that we have the means to prevent ticketing fraud” explained the Minister for Sports.
15:10 – Compensation claimed
“We have asked UEFA for compensation for the 2,700 people who were unable to attend the match,” explained the Minister of Sports.
2:50 p.m. – Deaths avoided according to Darmanin
“The decisions taken have prevented deaths. The pre-filters have been lifted to avoid crushing people on the police cordons or the gates” explained Gérald Darmanin.
