In a statement sent to its shareholders on Thursday January 19, 2023, Netflix set the tone. The platform estimated the number of households affected by account sharing at 100 million. A practice that “compromises our long-term ability to invest in Netflix and improve it, as well as to develop our business”, explained the American giant.
It is now official. Netflix, wish charge for account sharing beyond the same household at the end of the first quarter of 2023. The measurement should be based on the automatic detection of the IP address.

“IP address, device ID and account activity”
The streaming giant posted its FAQ, (frequently asked questions), this Tuesday, January 31, 2023. We learn about the concrete measures that must be put in place around this famous Netflix account sharing.
The rule, explained, is clear: “A Netflix account is intended for people who live together in the same household”. Devices detected in other locations may therefore be prevented from watching Netflix.
To know precisely where you are and thus restrict access accordingly, the service will use certain information such as “IP address, device ID and account activity from devices connected to the Netflix account”, is it written.
Anyone who is a member of your household, i.e. who lives with you and therefore shares your main address, can use your Netflix account. (…) If the device used to watch Netflix uses the main account holder’s household internet connection, we will not ask for verification. If a Netflix account is used by a device that is not associated with the primary account holder’s household, the device will need to be verified before it can be used to watch Netflix. This verification allows us to confirm that the device using the account is authorized to do so.
A link to the holder’s email address or phone number
The goal is to determine whether or not your account is connected to your primary location.
To apply additional billing to users who share the same password beyond the same household the platform had already indicated in recent weeks that it would rely on the data it already uses to provide its service to its ordinary subscribers, know this IP address. This is the technical identifier of devices connected to a home Wifi network or a cellular network, the identifier of devices and the activity of the account to determine if a device connected to an account is indeed linked to its main address. .
How will Netflix verify?
“When someone signs into your account from a device that is not associated with your Netflix household, or if your account is regularly accessed from a location outside your household , we may ask you to verify the device before it can be used to watch Netflix. This confirms that the device using the account is authorized to do so,” explains Netflix.
To verify a device, the platform says it will do the following: “Netflix will send a link to the email address or phone number associated with the primary account holder. This link will open a page containing a four-way confirmation code. digits. This code will need to be entered on the affected device within 15 minutes. If the code expires, you will need to request another confirmation code from the affected device. Once the code is entered, that device can be used to watch Netflix. Device verification may be required periodically,” Netflix wrote.
Login at least once every 31 days
Concretely, Netflix will now require its users to connect to the Wifi network of their main address. at least once every 31 daysfrom their TV app or smartphone, to confirm their “Netflix household”.
Thus, the platform will be able to automatically detect the profiles that connect to the account from the IP addresses of devices located at addresses different from this household.
A much more complex check to set up on a smartphone, but again, to avoid any disconnection from their smartphone and to enjoy their content while traveling, each user will now have to connect their smartphone to the Wifi network every 31 days. from home, open the Netflix app and launch content.
If a device is not connected to the home network beyond this time, it will no longer be considered a trusted device. Logging into the account will then be impossible.
What to do if you are on the move?
“Devices that identify themselves to Netflix without being associated with your primary address may be blocked,” Netflix clearly states in its FAQ.
What to do if you are on the move? To take advantage of your subscription away from home, you will now have to request Netflix to obtain a temporary code so that you can continue to watch films and series. This new password will be effective for seven consecutive days.
The platform obviously indicates that users will be able to pay a supplement, from 3 to 4 euros monthlyif they still want to share their account with someone who doesn’t live under the same roof.
