Game news Persona 5 Royal: A Nintendo Switch version up to the task? Our first impressions – TGS 2022

The Persona 5 phenomenon has been going on for six long years now, and its upcoming arrival on Nintendo’s hybrid console should allow it to reach the heights once again. Persona 5 Royal arrives on Nintendo Switch on October 21, 2022. A little over a month before its official release, the JV editorial staff was able to lay their hands on this new version of P5R. Is this port up to the J-RPG published by Atlus?

The Persona 5 Phenomenon

Persona 5 is a Japanese role-playing game (or J-RPG for Japanese Role Playing Game) developed by P Studio and published by Atlus. The first version was released on September 15, 2016 in Japan and nearly 7 months later in the West. Best seller of all time for the publisher on Japanese soil, then best launch for a game in the Persona saga in the rest of the world, P5 finally reached 3.2 million copies sold worldwide in December 2019. Then Persona 5 Royal comes sometime in 2019 on PlayStation 4 thus allowing the fifth episode to total 5 million sales including 1.8 million from the Royal edition.

And that’s not all. Beyond the adaptation of the adventures of Joker in animated series and manga, Persona 5 is available in video game with the release of two spin-offs, namely Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, a rhythm game, and especially Persona 5: Strikers. Released on February 10, 2020 in Japan, this Action-RPG inspired by the Musô genre and developed by OMEGA Force sells 1.5 million copies and has a “small” peculiarity. This official sequel to Persona 5 is available on Nintendo Switch unlike the game at the origin of the phenomenon. This injustice is about to be righted with the release of Persona 5 Royale on Nintendo’s hybrid console as well as PC (Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

A Switch version at the height?

There is little to worry about the Next Gen (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) and PC (Windows) versions of Persona 5 Royal. The power built into these platforms is more than enough to proudly wear the colors of Joker and his gang. As for the Nintendo Switch, it’s a whole other story. Big N’s hybrid console lags behind the 9th generation machinesand this could be felt on a major project such as Persona 5 Royal.

On the demo presented during the Tokyo Game Show 2022 and which visitors could browse for 15 minutes with a stopwatch in hand, only one dungeon was offered. Nevertheless, the game turns out to be unexpectedly fluid both during the exploration phases and during the fights. Even the interfaces, clean and neat on all the other versions, do not suffer in any way from the comparison. Persona 5 has all the same made sacrifices, and not the leastto arrive in full possession of its means (or almost) on the Nintendo console.

Cutscenes, gems of 2D animated series, are available in 720p. With the console “docked” it feels a little, without being really problematic, and the same goes for the rest of the graphics which remain very correct on Switch without ever competing with the other versions… especially those on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series or even Steam Deck (PC). Playing on Nintendo’s console is a credible alternative in 2022.

Persona 5 Royal will be released on October 21, 2022 on PC (Windows), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
