Preview Bayonetta 3: The sexy and crazy action game not to be missed at the end of the year on Nintendo Switch?

As its release approaches, we got to try out Bayonetta 3 for a few fights to see if Nintendo’s Beloved Witch is about to make a comeback. What to forget the failure of Babylon’s Fall for Platinum Games? Yes, by far!

Summary

  • The return of Bayonetta, the video game’s favorite witch!
  • Viola, gameplay close to Devil May Cry?

First of all, know that our gaming session was primarily focused on combat to try out the gameplay of Bayonetta and Viola, and we will have to wait for the release of the game to learn more about the story of Bayonetta 3, in addition to what has been shown so far in the trailers. Until then, it must be said that we are already very happy to have been able to get our hands on the game, since it is one of the Arlesians of the Nintendo Switch, with Metroid Prime 4 which we do not know still no more on his side.

As for Bayonetta 3, the latter was announced in 2017, the year of the console’s release, and had a long period of radio silence until making its big comeback to the front of the media scene in September 2021 when a trailer was shown during a Nintendo Direct. Almost a year later, the release of the game is now imminent, and we finally got to play it. So, was the wait worth it? It really seems like yes !

The return of Bayonetta, the video game’s favorite witch!

As we have seen in the trailers released so far, Bayonetta 3 is making significant changes to the gameplay of the series. If we could blame Bayonetta 2 for having an air of Bayonetta 1.5, here we find real major developments that modify the way of approaching the fights. To go back to basics, Bayonetta has its basic kit that has made the success of the series so far. Punch, kick, pistol… It is by combining all of these that we can make powerful combos and still just as visually impressive. Most of the time, the combos end with a kick or punch from a demon overpowered by Bayonetta which is particularly devastating. The other major element of the Bayonetta panoply is obviously her dodge which, if performed just before suffering an attack, allows time to be slowed down around the witch and thus take advantage of this vulnerability to overcome his opponents. This is called Envoûtement or Witch Time in English.

If this is the basis of gameplay found in the episodes of the saga, the particularity of this opus is that Bayonetta can now summon demons at any time to fight alongside her. In this state, we directly control the creature while the witch must practice the Dance of Submission (yes, yes…) so that the beast follows its orders, which makes it vulnerable to enemy attacks since we no longer direct it. Something to recall the gameplay of the character V in Devil May Cry 5. You can imagine it, but these giant creatures do colossal damage which is very useful against large enemies. In addition, thanks to the directional cross, we can choose which demon invoked, such as Gomorrah or Madama Butterfly, to take advantage of the blows of their own. In order not to abuse it, these summons draw heavily on the magic gauge which is almost no longer used for that since the Apotheosis of the Umbra from Bayonetta 2 has been replaced by this mechanism.

Despite this major change in how combat is approached, Bayonetta 3 still offers different weapons to vary the basic witch gameplay. However, the subtlety of this episode is that there is no more distinction between fists and feet and that we simply switch from one weapon to another. So, if Bayonetta always fights with her fists, her feet, and especially her pistols, she can also count on weapons obtained along the way. This is particularly the case of the G-Pillar, a kind of massive stick that is carried with two hands, very slow but with powerful blows, which can also be used as a cannon.

Viola, gameplay close to Devil May Cry?

After this sequence enjoying the new gameplay of Bayonetta, we were able to try Viola, the new heroine of this Bayonetta 3 who has been presented to us until now as an apprentice witch. In her handling, the young woman is very different from her elder, since she fights with the help of a katana and magic darts. As for the base, the latter has a weak and strong attack that she can charge to do fiery blows, projectiles, but the biggest difference mostly comes in how he uses the bewitchment. If Bayonetta has to dodge to activate it, Viola guards using her katana to trigger it. A distinction that doesn’t seem like much said like that, but which nevertheless changes the way of approaching things since the young woman is less agile than her elder and the timing for parrying is therefore tighter.

Beyond this difference between dodging and guarding, Viola also has the ability to invoke like Bayonetta, but the conditions for doing so are unique. By separating from her katana, Viola can summon Chouchou, her demonic familiar, who fights alone to defeat her enemies. For her part, the young woman is not as vulnerable as Bayonetta since she can still continue to attack, but with her bare hands, which makes her much less effective. Thus, the player continues to control Viola while Chouchou makes her life. The gameplay of the young witch therefore brings a few novelties to the experience, but still requires some time to adapt since she is less powerful than Bayonetta.

Beyond the skills of its two heroines, the real witchcraft of Bayonetta 3 is above all to succeed in offering a rendering in 60 frames per second on Nintendo Switch and to maintain it during the majority of fights. Thanks to this choice of fluidity on the part of the developers, the clashes are all the more successful and dynamic. Nevertheless, this decision is made to the detriment graphics that often lack finesse while the sets remain quite simple. In general, the title retains a somewhat dated game rendering, which is not surprising coming from a Switch game. Unfortunately, this aspect is not helped by the sometimes messy side of the fightsespecially with the huge creatures that can be summoned to fight, which does not help to ensure that the rendering on the screen is more readable.

Our impressions

After this short session, it’s clear that Bayonetta 3 is shaping up to be one of this year’s must-have games on Nintendo Switch. By retaining the fundamentals of its gameplay, the title breathes new life with the summoning of demons which radically changes the way of approaching combat. Beyond that, the sequences and combos of the witch are still impressive and satisfying, thanks in particular to the frame rate of 60 frames per second which gives a great fluidity to the experience. And then, we feel a desire to diversify the adventure with the character of Viola who brings a new way of approaching the fights. Despite all these qualities, the game still suffers from graphics that lack finesse and often messy clashes due to the deluge of action on the screen. In any case, we can’t wait to get our hands on Bayonetta, which is scheduled for October 28 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
