Game news Steelrising: A French Revolution action game inspired by Bloodborne and Jedi Fallen Order

Spiders has earned a small reputation game after game with Action-RPG enthusiasts. After the fantastic Victorian era of Greedfall, the Parisian studios revisit another period of history in Steelrising. An uchronic French revolution is in the spotlight in 2022.

During the BigBen Week organized by the publisher Nacon, the editorial staff of JV was able to attend a 30-minute presentation of Steelrising led by Spiders studios. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to take this version in hand, the game being still in development.

1789: An uchronic French revolution

Steelrising begins in 1789 in the middle of a city of Paris plunged into chaos. In this uchronic version of the French Revolution, the sovereign Louis XVI, passionate about automatons, establishes a curfew and suppresses the rebels in the blood with the help of his mechanized troops. The plot, which lasts a single “night”, focuses on the character of Aegis. This dancer-automaton, who once performed at the court of the Watchmaker King, receives the order to protect Marie-Antoinette against popular insurrection.

On a particularly rough night, the queen of the kingdom of France orders her automated bodyguard to roam the streets of the capital in order to find its creator… Eugène Vaucanson. He is the (fictitious) nephew of the inventor of automatons Jacques Vaucanson who died in 1782. For information, the latter became famous thanks in particular to the “Canard de Vaucanson” created in 1734. Although the motivations of the monarch remain blurry, Aegis goes to town.

The Spiders studios promise a completely honorable lifespan without going overboard. According to the developers, it will take between 15 and 20 hours of play to reach the end of the adventure and travel through an uchronic Paris of a “postcard”. From Saint Cloud (introduction to the game) to the Tuileries via La Cité and Les Invalides, etc. this French capital in ruins and above all draped in history is an invitation to explore. Steelrising is structured around several semi-open areas and encourages you to come back to them. Like a Metroidvania, obtaining certain tools and/or skills opens up new paths to explore.

An Action-RPG: From Bloodborne to Jedi Fallen Order

Since Mars: War Logs in 2013, Spiders has focused on a particular genre, and even a sub-genre… Action-RPG, and has developed over time a certain know-how in this field. Steelrising is therefore unsurprisingly an action-oriented role-playing game. However, the Parisian studios are inspired in 2022 by titles that have marked the video game sphere in recent years. Their new creation, by their own admission, draws from Bloodborne, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and finally Nioh, and reclaims certain playful principles.

It must be recognized that these influences are felt, more particularly at the level of the fights which are intended to be much more demanding than in the past. Steelrising challenges players without making difficulty the core of the experience. Although the bestiary, entirely made up of automatons, can be tricky, especially the bosses, the adventure is intended to be accessible to all. Spiders has integrated an “Assist” mode intended for less seasoned players in order to manage the difficulty via several “à la carte” options which allow, among other things, to reduce damage, etc.

The combat system bears a resemblance to the previously mentioned From Software game with its mix of melee and ranged combo attacks, fast-paced dodges and parries, and stamina management. Nevertheless, Steelrising emancipates itself from its model by adding an aerial dimension to the clashes and an express “cooling down”. This automaton-specific mechanic instantly refills the stamina gauge. Be careful not to abuse it, otherwise you will remain totally frozen for several seconds, and therefore vulnerable.

RPG requires, customization and the rise of the heroine are in order. Aegis can display several faces, to be selected at the start of the game (and only at the start of the game), and wear various clothes which, beyond the purely cosmetic aspect, grant bonuses and/or penalties. The arsenal is no exception. The 7 types of melee weapons, to which are added those at a distance, open up a range of opportunities that have a strong impact on gameplay. All these options, and much more, are available via “vestals” arranged within the different levels. These specific places, which recall the campfires of the Souls saga and more recently those of Elden Ring, also serve as save points.
