Game News The Callisto Protocol: the horror game at the heart of a big bad buzz, explanations

As promising as The Callisto Protocol is, that doesn’t prevent it from ending up in a controversy that has been affecting the video game industry for quite some time: crunch culture. The game director rightly praised it before opting for the coaster.

Mistreated developers?

Striking Distance may be a brand new AAA studio and The Callisto Protocol its brand new game, it is based on the great expertise of Glen Schofield: the man behind the Dead Space saga and later co-founded Sledgehammer Games to work on various Call of Duty. In short, large-scale projects and the management of large teams, everyone knows it.

A talented video game director whose last words did not go unnoticed: on Twitter, the American highlighted the crunch culture of its workforce. As a reminder, crunch is simply the fact of working a lot, well beyond what seems correct and under pressure from the hierarchy in order to complete a project on time and in the best possible way. Management methods that have been called into question for several years.

Glen Schofield

We work 6-7 days a week, nobody forces us. Exhaustion, fatigue, the Covid are there but we are working. About bugs, glitches, fixes. (…) Days of 12-15 hours. It’s the video game. We work hard. During lunches, dinners. You do it because you like it.

Oops, I did it again

Words that have remained across the throat of many Internet users, including some well-known personalities in the field. Famed Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who has previously uncovered crunch scandals through investigations, commented on the situation on Twitter.

That, coming from a studio head, is the very definition of crunch culture. Of course, no one is “forced” to work insane hours. But imagine the reduced bonuses and promotion opportunities that disappear if you don’t? “You do it because you like it.” It is passion transformed into a weapon of pressure. This is why people burn out in video games.

Faced with the bad buzz, Glen Schofield then returned to his remarks. He first deleted his tweet and apologized, along with a justification.

Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about the people I work with. Earlier I tweeted how proud I was of the effort and hours the team put into it. It was clumsy. We value passion and creativity, not long hours. I’m sorry for the team to appear as such.

The Callisto Protocol will be released in any case on December 2 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series and Xbox One.
