A distribution of rights that questions

The series will take place during the second agewhich notably deals with the fall of the Kingdom of Numenor, the offensive against Valinor, the rise of Sauronand the creation of the rings of power among which the Unique. Still, the details of the creation of Valinor, the appearance of Elves and Men or even the creation of the Rings of Power are told in the Silmarillion, whose adaptation rights are not in the hands of Amazon. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Amazon was very clear: the firm has the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

But then, how can a series on the creation of the rings be born? Well know that Tolkien has published numerous letters and side storiesand that a timeline detail of the Second Age appears in The Lord of the Rings. It is from these elements that the writers have designed the series to come in a few months, creating new intrigues along the way. All this has been seen and validated with the rights holders of the Tolkien family, but fans remain concerned nonetheless.

Amazon wants to make sure fans buy into the project

A concern that Amazon seeks at all costs to eliminate and, for this, the producers did not hesitate to surround themselves with and consult the greatest experts known to Middle-earth. The showrunners of the series therefore spoke Shaun Gunner, Tolkien Society President, Corey Olsen, Dr. Maggie Parkeas well as with the TikTokers Don Marshall and Silmaremily, the podcast The Prancing Pony or even community representatives Fellowship of Fans and TheOneRing.

Amazon has therefore surrounded itself with literary experts, fans, and great connoisseurs of the complex universe created by JRR Tolkien in order to present their intentions, excerpts from the series and offer them a lecture by John Garth, Tolkien specialist. According to The Gamer, most of them would be “leaved impressed from the event”. Of course, all signed confidentiality agreements, but were obviously able to express themselves here and there. Kaitlyn Facista, of the Tea With Tolkien blog, said:

Watching the footage, I started to feel immersed in Middle-earth in a way I didn’t when watching the trailer released earlier this year. There were moments of breathtaking beauty, exhilarating heroism, and beautifully captured humanity that evoked many of the same feelings I had when reading Tolkien for the first time.

The latter was also said to be tvery impressed with the knowledge of the showrunnerswhich have several times quoted from Tolkien’s letters, and not necessarily the best known. For his part, Corey Olsen indicated that the answers given to his questions far exceeded “his wildest expectations”but that he regretted having been able to see only short extracts and not an edited episode. An important element, because beyond loyalty to the lore and knowledge of the showrunners’ universe, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power should seduce as a series.
