news culture The Lord of the Rings: who are these 10 characters introduced in the Amazon series The Rings of Power?
The Rings of Power series, soon to be available on Amazon Prime Video, will feature many figures from Tolkien’s imagination. After returning to those already seen in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, let’s see what characters are introduced in this new series.
In our previous article, we gave you an overview of the characters well known to fans of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy who should play a major role in the new series. Rings of Powerdue September 2 on Amazon Prime Video. It was about Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-galad, Elendil and Isildur, but also about Sauron who at that time took on the deceptive appearance of Annatar to corrupt the Elves and push them to design the famous rings.
Knowing that the series aims to cover a wide spectrum of events that marked the history of the Second Age of Middle-earth and the island kingdom of Númenor, it is obvious that these individuals represent only a sample of the whole. characters brought to gravitate around the Rings of Power. And if some like Círdan may not appear in the first season, the cast of the series still mentions big names who are only familiar to readers of JRR Tolkien’s work, because absent from the film adaptations of Peter Jackson. These are the characters that we will discuss here, in addition to the unpublished specific to the series.
- Durin III and Durin IV
- Bronwyn, Rounding and the others…
Directly involved in the creation of the Rings of Power, the elven master smith Celebrimbor is played by actor Charles Edwards in the series. He is the grandson of Fëanor who once created the Silmarils. Celebrimbor first lets himself be manipulated by the stranger Annatar (Sauron) who pushes him to design the rings intended for Men and Dwarves.. But he ends up discovering Sauron’s plans and decides to forge the three Rings of the Elves alone. The latter will then be placed under the protection of individuals endowed with immense wisdom: Galadriel (the Nenya ring), Gil-galad (Vilya) and Círdan (Narya). Elrond and Mithrandir/Gandalf will also be given custody of those originally held by Gil-galad and Círdan. Note that the versions given differ slightly between The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and Legends. It is by secretly creating the One Ring that Sauron/Annatar is unmasked by Celebrimbor who decides to hide the three Rings from the Elves, on the advice of Galadriel. But Sauron will then work to torture Celebrimbor to try to force him to reveal the location of the precious rings…
Tolkien indicates that upon the death of the king of Númenor Tar-Palantir, his only daughter Míriel was forcibly married by his cousin Pharazôn who then took control of the kingdom. Even attempting to reach the sacred peak of the Meneltarma, Queen Regent Míriel will not be able to escape the submergence of Númenor. In the series, portrayed by actress Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Míriel senses an imminent threat to the kingdom that could well bring about the downfall of Númenor. Let’s not forget that Tolkien always clearly compared the island kingdom of Númenor with Atlantis, two civilizations at their peak that would end up completely submerged by the waves.
It is by forcing the legitimate queen Míriel to marry him that his proud cousin Pharazôn becomes king Ar-Pharazôn and takes control of Númenor. Then, when Ar-Pharazôn lands with his powerful fleet in Middle-earth, Sauron allows himself to be captured to better corrupt the king prompting him to attack the Immortal Lands to gain immortality. By transgressing “the Interdiction of the Valar”, Ar-Pharazôn will cause the engulfment of Númenor. According to actor Trystan Gravelle, Pharazôn is an adviser to Queen Regent Míriel, also the head of the guilds. Chancellor obsessed with his legacy, he would like to marry the relationship between the workers of Númenor and the regency. If we consider that the kingdom is divided into two categories, the faithful who accept their mortality and the men of the king who are unaware of the old elvish customs, Pharazôn falls into the second category. He seeks at all costs to escape the mortal fate of Men, which makes him the ideal target for Sauron/Annatar’s plans.. Ar-Pharazôn will be the last king of Númenor.
Durin III and Durin IV
Descendant of the founder of the great line of Durin, Prince Durin IV is played on screen by Owain Arthur. In Tolkien’s writings, his ancestor was a true hero to his people, who dubbed him “Durin Cheating Death”, though he perished before the end of the Elder Days. His remains were buried in a tomb in Khazad-dûm but it is his descendants that the series will present to us. Dwarf Lord Durin IV will send a great army of his warriors to fight alongside Elves and Men in the Last Alliance.. As for his father, King Durin III (Peter Mullan), he was said to be close to Elven goldsmiths during the Second Age, so much so that he received from Celebrimbor himself the first of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves.
From this point, we will discuss some unreleased characters mentioned in the Rings of Power cast that were created especially for the series. Logically, we still don’t know a lot about these protagonists, if not through some information revealed through trailers or interviews.
In the two long interviews bringing together the main actors of the series broadcast recently, we were able to have in particular a glimpse of Halbrand, Kemen (son of Pharazôn), Eärien (sister of Isildur) and the Dwarf princess Disa.
During this interview, Charlie Vickers did not reveal much about the character of Halbrand, a man from Númenor who seems to have a heavy past behind him. However, we have good reason to think that this protagonist with a heroic profile will find his place at the very forefront of the scenario. Halbrand is expected to cross paths with Galadriel after surviving a storm in the Belegaer Sea.. The series will reveal the rest of its adventurous journey.
Played by Leon Wadham, Kemen is the son of Chancellor Pharazôn whose importance in the web of events of the Second Age we have discussed at length.. The presence of his son is on the other hand much more unexpected and one can only rely on the elements revealed by the actor to have more. Leon Wadham portrays him as someone who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and always had everything he wanted, which should make him a reluctant individual to question himself.
The series will also introduce us to Eärien, Isildur’s sister, played by Ema Horvath. The actress had to learn to trace the letters of the númenorean alphabet, specially created for the occasion because it was never mentioned in Tolkien’s work. She describes Eärien as “a spirit character” who writes or draws a lot in the series. So Ema Horvath took calligraphy lessons from Daniel Reeve, the artist responsible for reproducing Bilbo Baggins’ beautiful cartography and handwriting in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation.
Created for the needs of the series but also to right an injustice by making a woman from the Dwarves appear for the first time, Princess Disa is played by Sophia Nomvete. The latter said she was extremely proud to embody this character who caused controversy with those who considered it unacceptable that a Dwarf woman could not wear a beard. Because, as Gimli explains to Éowyn: “you don’t see many Dwarf women but in reality they are so close to us in voice and appearance that we often confuse them with Dwarf men and that gave rise to a rumor that there are no dwarven women”. Disa’s role should tie directly into that of Prince Durin IV in the series.
Bronwyn, Rounding and the others…
We could complete this overview by adding to this list several other unpublished protagonists who are still very mysterious. Here are presented in pictures Hobbits called “Pievelus” (Largo, Marigold and Elanor “Nori” Brandifoot) who are said to have been the shortest of the Halflings. The Bronwyn Human (Nazanin Boniadi) and the wood elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova) will be the subject of a romance. Many other individuals are yet to be discovered in the series!
