This Friday, May 20, during the climb of the steps of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, a woman ran and screamed as the ceremony began. Quickly arrested, she denounced the sexual violence against Ukrainian women since the start of the conflict with Russia.
As the climb of the stairs took place, around 6:30 p.m. this Friday evening, a woman invited herself to the Red Carpet of the Cannes Film Festival.
At the foot of the steps, in front of the professional photographers, she fell in front of them screaming.
She was covered in red paint on her body and especially on her underwear. The woman wore a flag of Ukraine painted on her breasts had a message in English:
The authorities rushed to arrest her and cover her with a coat and stop this unexpected demonstration.
The action was quickly claimed by the SCUM, a movement of feminist and radical activists. Lhe English word “scum” means filth and mud.
Contacted at the beginning of the evening, the one who presents herself as the one present on the red carpet, told us that other actions of its movement have already taken place, particularly in Belgium.
We decided this evening to denounce the rapes of war, the procuring of war. We talk about rape, GPA, we are used as belly on legs… We think that nobody talks about women. Everyone needs to know. We show. The Cannes protester on May 20, member of the SCUM.
The demonstrator comes from the Paris region and is 18 years old.
On their networks this group presents itself as: “We are the SCUMs, radical feminists. We denounce all the violence committed by men on women, we proclaim their injustice, and we fight for their abolition at the root. We are the disbelievers of the cult of the phallus, the blasphemers of patriarchal religion.”
In 1967, a pamphlet entitled “SCUM Manifesto” written by Valérie Solanas, proclaimed the biological superiority of women and then called for the progressive eradication of men. This book, has inspired generations of feminists, according to the newspaper Le Monde.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, testimonies of women victims of violence, particularly sexual violence, have come to light.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had denounced in mid-April “hundreds of cases of rape” recorded in areas previously occupied by the Russian army, “including underage girls and very small children”.
The climb of the steps this Friday evening was that of the George Miller film, “Three thousand years waiting for you”. Film whose story is not related to violence against women.
The media exposure offered by the Cannes Film Festival seems once again to have motivated this protesting group.
