Inflation is on everyone’s lips. It is also clearly perceptible on our receipts in supermarkets. To take stock of this, we bought the same list of 25 consumer products as a year and a half ago. Result: the bill is actually saltier. Explanations.

Frozen foods, pasta, meat, oil, dairy products… When paying for groceries, inflation does not go unnoticed. To take the measure of this soaring price estimated in May at 5% for a year according to INSEE, we took out our invoices and returned to the same hypermarket in the Rennes agglomeration (Ille-et-Vilaine ) to fill an identical cart, a year and a half later. Our standard basket consisted of 25 products, mainly food, but also hygiene, organic or conventional, national brands as distributors. Race report: the amount of our receipt actually increased by 5.2% between December 2020 and May 2022, going from €63.66 to €66.98. For a family that spends an average of €512 on groceries per month, according to UFC-Que Choisir statistics, this would amount to a monthly surplus of around €25.

Widespread increases

In the game of comparisons, most of the items saw their prices inflate. In particular the brands of the distributors and the first prices: “The share of raw materials in the cost of these products is higher than for national brands. The latter can reduce their marketing budget to limit the increase in prices to consumers,” explains Olivier Dauvers, journalist and author specializing in commerce and consumption.

Only six products did not take a penny (apple juice, organic eggs, organic cucumber, bacon bits, cane sugar, organic flour) and four are slightly cheaper (toothpaste, orange juice, organic ham, dessert creams) . For the rest, it is the painful reality of inflation that prevails.

In a year and a half, the price of our top brand wholemeal bread has jumped by 8%, our 350 g of organic beef by 10%. Worse: the 500 g of Italian brand pasta exceeded the 20% increase mark.

In the category of items whose prices increased the most, we also find processed products such as our puff pastry, which increased by 19.5%. Coffee capsules, Roquefort, brand flavored yoghurts and even frozen salmon steaks also recorded a double-digit increase. Hygiene products are not spared: + 7% for 12 rolls of toilet paper.

A combination of factors

The reason for this general panic in prices? It is the conjunction of two types of inflation, explains Olivier Dauvers: “All products that need energy to be manufactured, packaged and transported are subject to latent general inflation. Added to this is a particular inflation, linked to the increase in the cost of raw materials, such as wheat. The victims of this second inflationary layer are, for example, all cereal-based products (pasta, biscuits, etc.) or meat, because cereals are used to feed livestock. »

Added to this are other more specific factors. For example, some products are affected by the vagaries of the weather, with shortages causing prices to rise. The increase in our toilet paper bill is explained by the surge in paper prices since the deconfinement.

And until when? For Olivier Dauvers, our receipt will increase further at least until the summer. In question, the war in Ukraine, which has not yet had any real effect on food prices in France: “Distributors and suppliers have started negotiations to set the new prices, but they should not be completed for several weeks. »
